Kangana Ranaut Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Farmers' Protest: Bollywood actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, who currently serves as the BJP leader and Member of Parliament (MP) from Mandi, has once again found herself at the center of a controversy with her recent remarks she made regarding the farmers' protest in India.
In a recent podcast, Ranaut suggested that the 2020-2021 farmers' protest against the three farm laws could have led to a crisis similar to what occurred during the Bangladesh Liberation War if not for the strong measures taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken nature, claimed that during the height of the farmers' agitation, bodies were seen hanging and incidents of rape were reported. She argued that had the Modi government not stepped in with a firm response, the situation could have spiraled into something much worse, possibly destabilizing the country in a manner comparable to the crisis that resulted in the formation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Her comments have sparked outrage, particularly among opposition parties and farmer groups who were actively involved in the protest. Many have accused Ranaut of exaggerating the events of the farmers’ protest to paint a negative image of the peaceful demonstrations, which were held to demand the repeal of the controversial farm laws.
Meanwhile, the farmer unions and opposition leaders have condemned Ranaut’s remarks as "inflammatory" and "baseless," with many pointing out that the protest remained largely peaceful, despite some clashes with police during the course of the movement.
As the controversy continues to brew, Ranaut remains unapologetic, standing by her statements and insisting that her remarks are based on reality.
