Maharashtra Declares Indigenous Cows as 'Rajyamata-Gomata' Ahead of Assembly Elections 2024
The Maharashtra government’s decision underscores this deep reverence for cows.
Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: In a significant move ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, the state government has officially designated indigenous cow breeds as "Rajyamata-Gomata" (State Mother Cow), recognizing their vital role in culture and agriculture. The decision was made by the state Cabinet led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
A statement released by the Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Department emphasized the historical and cultural importance of indigenous cows in India. It highlighted their contributions to human nutrition through milk, the role of cow dung and urine in Ayurveda and Panchgavya treatments, and their significance in organic farming. The statement read, "Considering the place of the native cow in Indian culture since the Vedic era and its importance in human diet and various medicinal and farming systems, the Cabinet has approved the declaration of native cows as 'Rajyamata-Gomata.'"
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his support for the initiative, stating, "Indigenous cows are invaluable to our farmers. This decision to grant them 'Rajyamata' status reflects their importance. Additionally, we will provide assistance to goshalas (cow shelters) for the care and rearing of these cows."
In Hinduism, the cow holds immense spiritual and cultural value, often referred to as "Gau Mata" (Mother Cow) for its role in sustaining life through milk production. The Maharashtra government’s decision underscores this deep reverence for cows, a symbol of motherhood and nourishment in Indian tradition.
Furthermore, the Maharashtra Cabinet also approved reports by the Justice Shinde Committee concerning the issuance of Kunbi-Maratha and Maratha-Kunbi certificates. This move is seen as part of the government's response to the Maratha community’s demand for inclusion in the OBC category, ahead of the upcoming elections.
