India Road Accidents Claim 21 Lives Every Hour as Fatalities Rise 5.3% in 2025
Overall road accidents rose by 5.3 percent in 2025, exceeding 5.13 lakh incidents nationwide.
High vehicular speed accounted for 82,124 road accidents in India during 2025, representing nearly 16 percent of total road mishaps, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The written response presented comprehensive traffic safety data submitted by police departments across states and union territories.
Dangerous driving habits contributed heavily to the casualties. Wrong-way driving and lane violations caused 4,089 accidents, red light jumping led to 276 incidents, and mobile phone usage while driving resulted in 136 crashes. Overall road accidents rose by 5.3 percent in 2025, exceeding 5.13 lakh incidents nationwide.
The government figures highlight a severe public safety challenge, revealing that India averaged 59 road accidents and 21 fatalities every hour in 2025. Total reported fatalities reached 183,382 during the calendar year. Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of overall accidents at 71,387, while Uttar Pradesh logged the highest death toll at 27,550.
Simultaneously, the Ministry presented rapid growth metrics for eco-friendly transportation. Lower operational costs and zero tailpipe emissions drove electric vehicle market share from 0.71 percent in fiscal year 2020 to 8.26 percent in fiscal year 2026, according to official Vahan portal records.
As of late July 2026, total registered electric vehicles across all categories crossed a historic milestone of 1.05 crore units. While clean mobility adoption accelerates rapidly, authorities continue urging strict adherence to speed limits and traffic regulations to curb preventable highway fatalities.
