Assam Flood Crisis: Over 3 Lakh Affected as CM Demands Special Central Package

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed Thursday that the state government requested special financial assistance from the Centre following unprecedented flooding. The formal demand was presented to an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), which recently concluded a four-day field inspection of devastated Upper Assam districts.
Describing the deluge as historic, Sarma noted that affected regions faced severe infrastructure, agricultural, and livelihood losses. The state urged federal authorities to designate Upper Assam flooding as an unusual calamity and requested relaxed eligibility guidelines under central schemes to accelerate local rehabilitation without procedural delays.

Additionally, Assam proposed establishing a dedicated Disaster Risk Reduction mechanism across all eight northeastern states to improve regional coordination during emergency management phases.
While floodwaters have begun receding across several locations, the humanitarian situation across affected areas remains critical. Official casualty figures rose to 78 fatalities, with more than three lakh residents still experiencing severe displacement and waterlogging.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held multiple telephonic assessments with Chief Minister Sarma, assuring full central support. State officials remain confident that the visiting central delegation will accurately report ground realities, enabling timely financial disbursement to rebuild battered communities.
