An undertrial sitting in a police van was shot at by a rival gang member in the Tis Hazari court here today, police said. The undertrial was admitted to a hospital. Dinesh Karala, suspected to be a member of the Gogi gang operating in Delhi-NCR, was brought to the court from Rohtak Jail by the Haryana Police for an appearance during the hearing of a case. The incident took place near the gate number 2 of the court premises when he was sitting in the Haryana Police vehicle, they added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said, after being produced in the court, "he was escorted back to jail van by the Haryana police". The officer said, "When they reached near the jail van parked in the Tis Hazari Court complex, suddenly a boy reached near Dinesh Karala and fired upon him with a country-made pistol, with the intention to eliminate him." Karala suffered an injury to his elbow. The boy ran away from the spot, he said.
The team has apprehended a juvenile. The pistol used in the incident was also recovered from him, the officer said. Police said that the assailant, a minor, was apprehended after a brief chase. They suspect that the minor is a member of the Tillu gang. Police claimed that the shootout is the outcome of the old rivalry between the Jitender Gogi gang and the Sunil Tillu gang. Karala is a member of Jitender gang and the juvenile is the active member of the Sunil Tillu Gang.
"Juvenile was assigned to eliminate Karala by Amit Dabang, an active member of Sunil alias Tillu gang. "On brief interrogation of Juvenile, it revealed that he was also involved in the killing of one Monu Nepali (associate of Gogi)," police said.
