“I want death sentence,” demands mother of the Unnao rape survivor

The mother of the 2017 Unnao rape victim on Monday demanded capital punishment for the convicted rapist after the Supreme Court stayed the Delhi High Court’s order suspending the life sentence of expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

Speaking to the media after the court’s observation, the victim’s mother said, "We are very happy. We want to thank the Supreme Court. My daughter should get justice. I want the accused to be given a death sentence..."

Meanwhile, when asked whether he was satisfied with the decision, Mehmood Pracha, advocate for the Unnao rape survivor, said he would leave it to the people of the country and the legal fraternity to assess the outcome for themselves.

“Do you want me to be happy when the girl has been taken away by the CRPF? I don't even get a chance to speak to her about the order, so do you think I will be happy? Is this really a relief to the victim?” advocate Mehmood Pracha questioned.

He further stated that he was not given a chance to argue the case and therefore was not able to place stronger points before the court compared to those raised by the CBI.

“Only one point was argued…the atrocities which were committed on the victim were so strong that if a tip of an ice berg is brought before any court of justice, they would have sympathy for the girl,” he added.

The advocate also alleged that the CBI did not give them an opportunity to argue in the case by not making them a party and failed to raise points that he said were more relevant than those argued during the hearing today.

The Supreme Court has also sent a notice to Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
