Sonam Wanghcuk's Wife on Allegations Linked to Pakistan: ‘Absolute False Propaganda'

Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife on Allegations Linked to Pakistan Latest News: The now-detained climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has called the Pakistan narrative about her husband “absolute false propaganda.”

Sharing a video clip from a conference the couple attended in February this year on her Instagram handle, Wangchuk’s wife said, “The Pakistan narrative about Sonam Wangchuk is absolute false propaganda. He and I were invited for a conference on Climate Change organized by the United Nations and Dawn Media.”

“The videos are attached for everyone’s watching. The point to highlight is Sonam had praised the leadership of Mr Modi for initiatives on climate action like Simply Life. Kindly circulate this widely because the ridiculous false narrative and propaganda that is maliciously being used to defame him has to be stalled,” she added in the post.

Speaking at the conference, Sonam Wangchuk can be seen praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiatives to save the environment.

“Similarly leadership has to take charge, world leaders, while many world leaders are now denying climate change even, I am happy that Prime Minister Modi has not only taken many initiatives but also launched a special mission called mission life, life style for the environment to urge people to live simpler life. This kind of initiatives we expect from leadership, from media, from celebrities all, so that we have a safer place to live,” Sonam Wangchuk can be seen as saying so in the video clip from the conference shared by his wife.

Sonam Wangchuk visited Pakistan for the climate conference in Islamabad in early February. Wangchuk has shared the full speech on his YouTube channel.

Following the visit to Islamabad for the conference, Wangchuk, in a separate post, expressed his shock over some people both in Pakistan and India. He said some Pakistanis questioned him for praising PM Modi from the stage he spoke on in Islamabad, while some in India questioned him for his visit to Pakistan.

He wrote in a post on X, “YES I'M IN ISLAMABAD. And yes, I praised PM Modi's #MissionLiFE Why should anyone be surprised. Air, water, pollution & emission know no boundaries, our efforts should also not...And good initiatives anywhere must be appreciated! We Shall Overcome!”

Sonam Wangchuk has tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the same post.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on 26 September, two days after the peaceful protest turned violent. Four people were killed in the police and CRPF firing on the same day, leaving about 90 injured. Some still remain critically injured, with one shifted to AIIMS Delhi. However, the condition of one critically injured person is reported to be very critical, with the bullets piercing through his lungs.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act, 1980, and is in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

His supporters are continuously praying for his release. Some peaceful protests were also seen in Delhi, led by the Aam Aadmi Party. One more protest is being held this evening in Jaipur, Rajasthan, led by Dolkaba, Save Dol Ka Badh Forest, a citizens' movement to save a 105-acre urban forest in Jaipur.

“Stand for Justice. Stand for Sonam Wangchuk,” it said in a post on instragram.

An Indian journalist also attended the conference in Pakistan; Criticizes govt for its blame on Sonam Wangchuk for the violence in Ladakh

Journalist Nirupama Subramanian, who also attended the same conference Sonam Wangchuk attended in Pakistan, stated that the conference was about “climate change and how South Asians had to do something about it together and that ‘Wangchuk had nothing but praise for Prime Minister Modi.’”

Nirupama Subramanian said in a post on X, “Among the many charges that the govt has levelled against Ladakh climate change activist #SonamWangchuk in connection with the recent violence in #Ladakh is that he attended a conference in Pakistan organised by Dawn media group and that shows how last week’s deadly protests were incited by him with foreign help. I attended the conference too.”

“It was about climate change and how South Asians had to do something about it together as we shared mountain ranges, river systems and coastlines. And let me tell you that in his presentation, Wangchuk, who has been a supporter of the BJP for its doing away of Article 370, and making Ladakh a separate UT, had nothing but praise for Prime Minister Modi,” she continued.

“No one in the audience seemed to know how famous he was. When Sonam was introduced by the moderator, there was no mention of his political activism at all. It was only after I mentioned to my friend and journalist @HamidMirPAK about the Three Idiots link that he alerted his network and TV crews started buzzing around him and he was mobbed by youngsters,” she further stated in her post.

She strongly criticized the government for turning a peaceful protest into ‘a pit of disappointment and anger,’ and for allegedly “casually shifting the blame” for the government’s “own acts of omission and commission" in Ladakh on Sonam Wangchuk.

“This whole campaign about his alleged anti-nationalism has been drummed up by a government that failed to foresee how it was turning a peaceful little place into a pit of disappointment and anger, and casually shifting the blame for its own acts of omission and commission in Ladakh on this guy. And a spineless, communal media serving it up in another of its spectacular self goals. I wish I could use some choice expletives but I will confine myself to this: cynical, self serving and stupid beyond belief,” Nirupama Subramanian said in her post on Sunday (28 Sep. 2025).
