Pune Bus Rape case: How dogs and police found the accused latest news: Dattatray Gade, who was taken to court for raping a 26-year-old woman in a parked Shivshahi bus at Pune's Swargate depot, was arrested on Friday after a three-day chase. He was picked up around 1:30 a.m. from a sugarcane field in Gunat village in Shirur taluka, where he had been hiding.
13 units with more than 100 men and a canine squad were dispatched by the police to find Gade, missing since Tuesday when he was reportedly raped. Deputy Commissioner of Police Nikhil Pingle headed the unit that apprehended Gade and subsequently turned him over to Swargate police for inquiry. He is set to be produced in court after 3 p.m. and is held in the Lashkar police station at the moment.
A huge search operation was initiated to arrest Gade in his native village, Gunat, with the assistance of the villagers. Police officers from the crime branch, drone cell, and dog squad from nearby districts were deployed. DCP Pingle informed that the villagers assisted the police in the search operation of Gade.
"Gade had visited his relatives' residence in the same village at midnight to request water.". As soon as he took the water bottle, he purportedly told them that he regretted what he had done. He had purportedly told them that he wanted to surrender to the police and went out of the relatives' residence," said police sources. The police team was, however, tipped off about his whereabouts, which resulted in his arrest.
Pune Police were under immense pressure following strong criticism from the Opposition and other organizations. Deputy Chief Minister and Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar had instructed the Pune Police Commissioner to personally investigate the case and arrest the accused forthwith.
"The rape incident at Swargate bus stand in Pune is highly shameful, pained, and maddening for every citizen of a civilized society. The crime by the accused is unpardonable, and no punishment can be given other than the death penalty.". CM Devendra Fadnavis has also taken a serious note of the incident and has given the necessary instructions to the police,” he said.
The National Commission for Women, after seriously noting the sexual assault, had requested the state police chief to file a detailed report of investigation. The Chairperson of the Commission, Vijaya Rahatkar, in a letter to the state Director-General of Police, Rashmi Shukla, had requested filing an investigation report and a copy of the victim's complaint.
The preliminary inquiry found Dattatray Ramdas Gade to reside in Gunat village in the Shirur taluka of Pune district. His family owns ancestral land measuring three acres and also a family bungalow. Both his parents live in the fields, and in addition, there is a brother, wife, and children.
Gade didn't have work and was just roaming about finding work. Sources added that he was a history-sheeter and had resorted to robbery and looting of villagers for quick money. The accused had purchased a four-wheeler in 2019 by taking a loan for carrying passengers from Pune to Ahilyanagar.
He used to provide lifts, particularly to elderly women adorned with jewelry, and rob them at knife-point during this period. Gade had run in the election at Gunat village for the position under the state government's TantaMukti Abhiyan (dispute-free village campaign) but lost it.
He was also doing election work in the recent Assembly polls, sources said. Gade had committed a robbery at Kare Ghat, which is near Shirur village, in 2020 and was accused of robbery and convicted. He has cases registered at Shikrapur, Supa, Kedgaon, and Kotwali police stations in the Ahilyanagar district as well.
Former (CJI) DY Chandrachud convicted the incident calling it "Nirbhaya moment" and bring the attention on the law enforcement
