Poonch Tragic Accident: Two Go Missing, Seven Rescued after Car Falls into River

Poonch Tragic Accident: Two Go Missing, Seven Rescued after Car Falls into River latest news: In a accident on Thursday night, a passenger car fell into a river in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, with at least two people missing and seven rescued. The taxi cab was on its way from Poonch town to Surankote when it got out of the driver's hands at Kalai Bridge and fell into the river at around 8:30 PM.

Headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Poonch, Shafqat Hussain, a rescue operation was initiated immediately after the accident. Seven individuals, four of whom were women, were rescued and brought to the hospital for treatment. "Two persons were washed away by the river, and the operation to trace them is still going on. The river is currently in spate due to heavy rain in the region," police added.

In another road accident in the same district, the driver of a truck lost his vehicle's control, which toppled down the mountainside at Chang village in Bufliaz, killing him. This was also on Thursday.

The past heavy rains have put most streams and rivers of the Jammu division in spate. The upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received heavy snowfall in the past 24 hours, and the plain regions of the Jammu division were pounded with rain. Light snow also occurred in Srinagar city and other plain regions of the Valley in the past 12 hours. Gulmarg ski resort had 1.5 feet of fresh snowfall, and Zojila Pass, Gurez, and Razdan Pass had 4 feet.

The Srinagar-Jammu, Srinagar-Leh, and Mughal roads have been shut by the authorities because of the heavy rain and snow in the past 24 hours. The Meteorological (MeT) office forecasts that the same weather will prevail on Friday.

The government had delayed the 'Khelo India 2025-Winter Sports in Gulmarg' owing to limited snowfall in the ski resort. But the recent snowfall on the slopes of Gulmarg ski resort suggests winter sports could be declared earlier than expected.

This chain of mishaps only goes to show that the region is facing problems due to unfavourable weather conditions and how imperative is timely rescue operations to rescue human lives.
