Delhi Doctors Remove Shaving Razor from Man’s Stomach in Rare Surgical Case: In a remarkable case that highlighted the intersection of mental health challenges and medical emergencies, a team of doctors at a private hospital in Delhi successfully removed a shaving razor from the stomach of a 20-year-old man. The man, who is battling depression and suicidal tendencies, swallowed the razor following an argument with his father, who also struggles with mental health issues.
A Complex Medical and Psychological Case
The razor was ingested in two parts: the blade holder, which became lodged in the stomach, and the handle, which traveled to the large intestine. The situation posed a serious threat to the young man’s life.
A team of surgeons led by Dr. Tarun Mittal, along with Dr. Anmol Ahuja, Dr. Shresth Manglik, Dr. Rakesh S, Dr. Karthik Krishna, and Dr. Tanushree Nahata, undertook a two-step surgical procedure to address the case.
- Step 1: A laparotomy was performed to open the stomach and remove the blade holder.
- Step 2: The handle, which had reached the colon, was carefully milked distally and removed using sigmoidoscopy.
"This case was not only unusual due to the nature of the foreign object but also because of the underlying psychological factors," Dr. Mittal explained. "It required meticulous surgical planning and a compassionate approach to address the patient’s mental health alongside his physical health."
Emphasizing Mental Health Awareness
Dr. Mittal stressed the importance of early intervention for mental health issues and the need to destigmatize seeking help. "Fear and shame often prevent people from addressing their mental health, leading to crises like this," he said.
The young man’s act was driven by emotional distress, emphasizing the urgent need for greater mental health awareness and support systems. Post-surgery, he has been referred for counseling to address his depression and suicidal tendencies, and his family is seeking support for his father’s mental health challenges.
Gratitude and Holistic Care
The patient’s family expressed their relief and gratitude. "We are deeply thankful to the doctors for their swift action and care," his mother said.
Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, commended the surgical team for their delicate handling of the case. "At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, we are committed to a holistic approach, and addressing mental health concerns is a priority," he stated.
This case serves as a reminder of the intricate connection between mental and physical health and the importance of addressing both with care and sensitivity.
