He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where he had been admitted following a decline in his health.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh’s family relocated to India during the partition in 1947. He pursued higher education in economics, earning a doctorate from Oxford University. Dr. Singh’s career encompassed roles as an academician, bureaucrat, and politician. In 1991, amid a severe economic crisis, Dr. Singh was appointed as the Finance Minister by then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. Dr. Singh was the first Sikh to hold the office of Prime Minister in India and was the first since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term. His leadership was instrumental in navigating India through various economic challenges and achieving significant milestones in development.

His demise marks the end of an era in Indian politics. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with leaders and citizens alike mourning the loss of a visionary who dedicated his life to the service of the country.
