Pakistan Open to Neutral Investigation into Pahalgam Terror Attack, Says PM Sharif

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday stated that Pakistan is "open to participating in any neutral investigation" into Tuesday's terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists and injured many others. The attack prompted India to take several diplomatic measures against Pakistan, one of which was placing the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. Additionally, all Pakistani nationals who entered via the Attari land border have been asked to leave by May 1.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif  addressing a ceremony at a military academy in Abbottabad, Sharif said, “Pakistan is open to participating in any neutral, transparent and credible investigation.”

However, he emphasized that Pakistani forces remain "fully capable and prepared to defend the country's sovereignty and its territorial integrity against any misadventure as clearly demonstrated by its measured yet resolute response to India's reckless incursion in February 2019".

Sharif's remarks follow Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif's statement to the New York Times, where he said Islamabad is "ready to cooperate" with "international inspectors."

Asif also accused India of using the terror attack as a pretext to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty for "domestic political purposes," asserting that India acted to "punish Islamabad without any proof or investigation."

"We do not want this war to flare up, because flaring up of this war can cause disaster for this region," Asif told NYT.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to take strong action against the perpetrators of a deadly terror attack, declaring, “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers.” Speaking from Bihar, he emphasized, “We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth,” and promised that terrorism would not go unpunished, adding that those responsible would face a punishment beyond their imagination.
