PM Modi Slams Congress and SP for Destroying Ambedkar’s Legacy at Lucknow Event

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharply criticised the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) and accused both parties of having “committed a sin” by undermining the legacy of Baba Sahab Bhimrao Ambedkar. His remarks came at the inauguration of Rashtra Prerna Sthal in Lucknow on the occasion of the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Modi said that in the decades following independence, there was a tendency among political elites to attribute all national achievements to “one family”, a reference to the Gandhi-Nehru family. He said that both the Congress in Delhi and the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh had contributed to diminishing the recognition of Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation.

Modi claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has worked to preserve and celebrate Ambedkar’s legacy, citing the development of Panch Tirth sites, key locations tied to Ambedkar’s life across India and abroad.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the transformation of Rashtra Prerna Sthal from a garbage site into a landmark complex featuring 65-foot-high bronze statues of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, and Vajpayee during his speech. He credited this project and similar efforts as part of the BJP’s broader mission to honour diverse national icons.

The address also touched on national integration and development themes, including the BJP’s role in dismantling Article 370 and promoting initiatives in Uttar Pradesh to boost local industries.
