Delhi Government Unveils Historic Budget After 23 Years latest news: Today, the BJP government of Delhi tabled its first budget after coming back to power in 23 years. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that, for the first time, the budget of Delhi has crossed 1 lakh crore.
She emphasized that the budget of 2023 was 78,800 crore, which has been brought down to Rs76,000 crore for 2024-25, one of the worst fiscal positions of Delhi. This year's budget is termed historic.
The government has chosen ten areas for development in terms of infrastructure and basic amenities. Rs210 crore has been allocated to pregnant women, handing out Rs21,000 to each beneficiary. Another Rs5,100 crore is being planned for the Women's Prosperity Scheme, distributing Rs2,500 per month to beneficiaries. Infrastructure projects also target enhanced connectivity with the NCR region and are being helped by the central government.
The budget allocates an amount of Rs1,000 crore for women's safety measures and the installation of 50,000 more cameras. The additional Rs5 lakh insurance coverage will be given under the Ayushman Arogya Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat will provide free treatment up to Rs10 lakh. 2,144 crore has been allocated by the government for the purpose.
Capital expenditure has doubled to Rs 28,000 crore compared to Rs 15,000 crore previously. The Chief Minister emphasized the challenges of managing Delhi's deteriorating infrastructure, including polluted water, poor sewage systems, and air pollution. The budget aims to address these issues and revive Delhi's economy.
The budget is guided by the ideas of equality, development, and faith, taking cues from leadership figures such as Ambedkar, Gandhi, and Modi. Gupta hoped that this budget would be a turning point for Delhi, which has suffered enormous setbacks in the last decade.
