Republic Day 2026: 982 Police, Fire, Home Guard & Correctional Personnel to Receive Gallantry and Service Medals

A total of 982 personnel from Police, Fire Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence (HG&CD), and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of Republic Day, 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a press release on Sunday (January 25, 2026).

Gallantry Medals

Out of the total awardees, 125 personnel will receive the Medal for Gallantry (GM), including 121 police personnel and four fire service personnel.

The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery in saving lives and property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals, with due regard to the risks involved and the duties of the officer concerned.

Among the 125 Gallantry Award recipients, 35 personnel are from “Left Wing Extremism-affected areas”, 45 from the Jammu and Kashmir region, five from the North-East, and 40 from other regions, recognised for their courageous actions.

Service Medals

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is awarded for a special distinguished record of service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) recognises valuable service marked by dedication and resourcefulness.

Out of 101 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, 89 have been awarded to Police Service, five to Fire Service, three to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service, and four to Correctional Service.

Similarly, out of 756 Medals for Meritorious Service, 664 have been awarded to Police Service, 34 to Fire Service, 33 to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service, and 25 to Correctional Service.
