Terrorist Attack: Intelligence Agencies Had Warned of “Hot Summer in Jammu and Kashmir”
Intelligence agencies had earlier warned that Pakistan was preparing for a “hot summer in Jammu and Kashmir,” News18 reported. With the yesterday’s terrorist attack — claimed by The Resistance Front — the warning has tragically come true. The attack claimed 28 lives and left many others injured.
The incident has also dealt a severe blow to the local economy, especially in areas like Pahalgam where many residents depend heavily on tourism. The sudden loss of tourist activity is expected to push many families into poverty and backwardness.
According to the report, in response to the intelligence warnings, several high-level security meetings were conducted. One such meeting took place on March 10, chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. Another was held on April 6 in Srinagar, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a Unified Command meeting.
The report states that around 70 foreign terrorists are believed to be active in Jammu and Kashmir. While many recent infiltration attempts have been foiled by the Indian Army, it is suspected that some foreign terrorists may have already infiltrated and were waiting for directions from their handlers to strike.
“With the snow melting, hill routes have opened up. It appears that the terrorists in Pahalgam descended from the hills to reach the Baisaran meadows and target unsuspecting tourists,” a source was quoted as saying. “A cordon and search operation has been launched to prevent the terrorists from escaping. An NIA team is on standby to visit the site, and the agency could soon begin a crackdown on overground workers who may have supported the foreign terrorists.”
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. today.
