Shukla is the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) in over four decades and the second Indian to have been to the ISS.
Shubhanshu Shukla had embarked on Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station on June 25, 2025 from Kennedy Space Center.
He spent 18 days in space, during which he participated in over 60 scientific experiments. He returned to the Earth on July 15, 2025 and since then, for the next 45 days, he, along with other astronauts, went through a planned period of post-flight activities and rehabilitation to readjust to Earth's gravity.
On August 18, he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after returning to India on the 17th of the same month.
Following the meeting taking to X, he wrote, “Met with the Hon PM today. Last time I spoke to him virtually was from Orbit with this same flag in the background on the ISS. I cannot describe how proud I felt that day representing Bharat and today when I was speaking to the PM @narendramodi Like I said this is just the first step in Bharat's journey of human spaceflight.”
Shubhanshu Shukla Shares a Time-lapse Video of India From Space:
Axiom Mission 4 pilot has shared a time-lapse video of India from Space, captured while him onboard the ISS craft orbiting the earth.
The video includes the Himalayas also. He said, “When you see this, I want you to feel as if you are sitting in the cupola (window in ISS) and witnessing it yourself.”
He explains, the time lapse as, “This is a Time-lapse video of Bharat from space. The @iss is moving from south to north from the Indian Ocean. We are travelling along the east coast of India. The purple flashes you see are lightning happening in thunderstorms all over the country. Once the lights fade and a dark region appears- that's the Himalayas. As we cross over, you see light start to flood in because you are witnessing a sunrise in orbit. Also, notice the stars in the background.
“It truly is a mesmerising dance of natural elements turning it into one beautiful spectacle,” he added.
He said that because he was in Space during the monsoon season, he said it was mostly cloudy.
“Unfortunately, I was up there during the monsoon season and it was mostly cloudy, yet I managed to steal a few shots of Bharat, one of which you are seeing,” he said.
