Kharge Alleges VB–GRAM G Will Turn Poor Villagers, Farm Labourers Into ‘Slaves of the Rich'
The VB–GRAM G Bill was passed by Parliament during the Winter Session 2025, recently.
Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, who is in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, on Saturday, stated that the party would protest against the VB–GRAM G Bill, a replacement for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He said the Congress has instructed party members across states and districts to carry out sustained demonstrations against the legislation.
Speaking to the media, Kharge said, “We have already told our people in each state and district that the agitation should take place and it should be continued, not closed. And even opposition parties are also supporting us.”
Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the BJP-led NDA government is making the country's poor slaves to the rich.
“MGNREGA is a lifeline for the poor. They are purposely destroying that and they want to make the poor villagers and farm laborers slaves of the rich. That's why we fought to retain the MNREGA law, and all its provisions should remain as they are. I condemn the new law, which is only helping the government,” Kharge added.
Referring to changes introduced in VB–GRAM G with respect to funding, Kharge said, “Earlier, it was 90 percent from the central government and 10 percent from the state government, but now they have changed it to 60-40. This means they don't want to help the states. They want money from the state governments, and they want to reduce their own contribution. This clearly shows that they have no interest in the development of the poor.”
