Mumbai: Samajwadi Party leader calls for stronger law against language-based crimes; Student dies by suicide after alleged assault over Marathi
Meanwhile, Mumbai BJP President Ameet Satam held Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray responsible for the incident.
Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi, reacting to the suicide of a student following a language-related issue, on Friday said the government must enact a specific law to deal with crimes committed over language issues.
According to PTI, a 19-year-old student in Thane district died by suicide after a group of people allegedly assaulted him on a local train following an argument over him not speaking in Marathi.
The student, Arnav Laxman Khaire, a first-year science student, was found hanging in his apartment in Kalyan East on Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, Mumbai BJP President Ameet Satam held Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray responsible for the incident.
“Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray are spreading poison in the public. Language is a medium of communication, not conflict. A Marathi youth lost his life. No one will forgive Uddhav and Raj Thackeray for this,” Satam told PTI.
BJP leader Raj Purohit also expressed a similar opinion and called for immediate action against those who allegedly spread "venom of language politics".
Speaking to PTI on the matter, said, “I don’t think there can be a worse incident than this. Tarun, a 19-year-old Marathi boy, was beaten brutally on a train, apparently over speaking Hindi. We often hear about attacks on Hindi speakers, but now even Marathis are not spared...He must have informed someone, possibly his parents, and on that basis, the police must register a suo moto FIR...” He added, “Those who spread the venom of language politics, indulge in dirty politics, and promote violence must face immediate action.”
