Pension Relief for Unorganised Workers: Cabinet Extends Atal Pension Yojana Until 2031
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the continuation of the government's flagship social security initiative, the Atal Pension Yojana (APY), on Wednesday until the financial year 2030-31.
According to the official release, the decision includes extended funding support for promotional activities, developmental initiatives, and gap funding to ensure the scheme’s long-term sustainability.
As per the government notification, the extension is focused on ensuring old-age income security for millions of workers in the unorganised sector.
The scheme was launched on May 9, 2015. It provides a guaranteed minimum pension ranging from INR 1,000 to INR 5,000 per month starting at the age of 60, depending on the subscriber’s contributions.
According to the latest data as of January 19, 2026, over 8.66 crore subscribers have already enrolled in the scheme.
According to the implementation strategy, the government will continue providing support for awareness campaigns and capacity building to expand outreach.
