PM Modi claims 12 crore families connected to water supply; Delhi reports “sewage-smelling” drinking water

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday claimed that over 12 crore families have been connected to water supply through taps in the past 5–6 years.

PM Modi made the statement while addressing party workers on the occasion of BJP’s national working president, Nitin Nabin, taking charge as the party’s new and 12th National Working President.

He said, “After 70 years of independence, piped water had reached only three crore rural families. No one cared about the pain of mothers and sisters, the struggles they faced for water... I have seen that pain. I was connected to the reality of the land. I had seen the suffering of mothers and sisters right before my eyes, and that is when we launched the Jal Jeevan Mission.”

He added that in a matter of a few years, over 12 crore families have been connected to water supply through taps, while also stating that it was his government that “understood the suffering of sisters falling ill from smoke.”

He stated that earlier, LPG gas was considered a privilege of the rich. “The BJP ran a campaign with full sensitivity to connect every home to LPG,” he added.

“Similarly, there is a campaign to turn village sisters into Lakhpati Didis. This too became possible because the BJP is sensitive to the dreams of sisters and daughters,” he further stated.

PM Modi, however, did not mention clean water in his speech, nor did he refer to the recent deaths due to water contamination in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, the cleanest city in the country, or the poor quality of drinking water in some parts of Delhi.

His statement comes at a time when residents of West Delhi’s Kirti Nagar are currently suffering from “sewage-smelling” drinking water.

The incident was brought to light by the Peek TV team, who visited the homes of residents in the area.

A resident of West Delhi’s Kirti Nagar told Peek TV that they have been receiving poor-quality drinking water since the BJP government came to power, claiming that such conditions did not exist during Kejriwal’s government.

“We were getting clean drinking water until the BJP came to power,” claimed a resident.

BJP MLA Harish Khurrana has told Peek TV that the water supply issues in his constituency will be completely fixed by the end of March.
