Following Air India Flight AI-171 Crash, Centre Notifies New Aviation Safety Rules

In the wake of the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 last week, the Union government has notified the ‘Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions Caused by Buildings and Trees, etc.) Rules, 2025’, according to a report by The Wire.

The rules empower civil aviation authorities to issue notices to property owners whose buildings or trees obstruct aerodrome operations, requiring them to either demolish the structure or reduce its height within a 60-day notice period.

The process for demolition, tree cutting, or height reduction will follow the same procedures as used for removing unauthorised constructions under local district laws.

According to the report, authorised officers may enter premises during daylight hours after notifying the property owner, to verify whether the structure or tree violates aviation safety norms. If the property owner does not comply, the matter can be referred to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for further action.

Property owners are permitted to appeal the order and may also seek compensation for damages or inconvenience under Section 22 of the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024.

The new rules come after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANB) operating Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon (June 12, 2025). The aircraft fell into a residential area in Meghani Nagar, just minutes after departure from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The crash claimed the lives of 241 of the 242 people on board, and also caused casualties on the ground.

As of now, the government has not released the official figure of total fatalities, including those on the ground.
