Who is Rekha Gupta, Delhi's Fourth Woman Chief Minister? Know All About Her

Who is Rekha Gupta, Delhi's Fourth Woman Chief Minister? Rekha Gupta, former president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), was officially announced as Delhi's fourth woman Chief Minister by the BJP on Wednesday evening, bringing an end to nearly two weeks of speculation.

Gupta, a 50-year-old leader, will be sworn in as Chief Minister tomorrow at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan in the heart of Delhi. She will be the first woman from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold the top post in the city. Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shalimar Bagh, secured a decisive victory in the February 5 Assembly elections, defeating AAP’s Bandna Kumari by a margin of over 29,000 votes.

With this victory, Gupta joins the ranks of women leaders who have previously held the office of Delhi's Chief Minister. Sushma Swaraj, representing the BJP, and Sheila Dikshit from the Congress Party were the first two women to hold the position. More recently, Atishi from the Aam Aadmi Party was also a notable contender.

The BJP's impressive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections saw the party winning 48 seats, marking its return to power in the national capital after a gap of 27 years. Gupta’s rise to the top has been seen as a result of her deep-rooted connection with Delhi’s political landscape and her significant contributions at the grassroots level.

As a prominent BJP figure, Gupta's journey began in student politics, where she made her mark as the President of DUSU during the 1996-97 academic year. Over the years, she has built a robust political career, serving as a councillor and the former Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

With her leadership now set to steer Delhi, all eyes are on her to deliver on the promises made during the election campaign, as she prepares to take charge of the capital at a time when it faces numerous challenges, both politically and administratively.
