More than 76,650 cyber crime complaints involving women were reported in 2025, marking a sharp spike in online abuse cases across India, according to official data presented in Parliament.

A significant portion of these complaints was linked to the circulation of obscene and abusive content, which alone accounted for 37,743 cases during the year. Incidents of cyber stalking and online harassment also featured prominently, reflecting the growing risks associated with increased digital and social media usage.

The surge represents a jump of over 28,000 cases compared to 2024, indicating a steep rise in such offences within a year. The data further shows that complaints had fluctuated in previous years, rising in 2022, dipping in 2023, and climbing again through 2024, before witnessing a sharp escalation in 2025.

Separately, offences classified under online and social media-related crimes have continued to grow steadily, reaching 1,73,766 complaints in 2025, up from 72,301 in 2021.

Sharing the figures in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the complaints were registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
