Chandigarh mayor election 2024: Administration announces new date for mayoral polls

Chandigarh Mayor Election 2024 New Date: In a major development, the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, has announced the new date for Chandigarh's Mayoral Polls that were earlier supposed to be held on January 18.

As per the order issued by Vinay Pratap Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, the meeting for the election of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor will now be held at Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on February 6, 2024 at 11 am.

Chandigarh was all set to get a new Mayor on Thursday while the city was closely monitoring the mayoral polls. It was being considered the first round of 'The BJP vs INDIA' alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

It is pertinent to mention that a petition was filed demanding elections to be held on Thursday only. However, the petition, filed regarding the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, will now be heard on January 23.

This year, AAP and the Congress party have formed an alliance under which, AAP will fight for the mayor's seat while the Congress will contest for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor posts.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 14 councillors while Aam Aadmi Party has 13 councillors, and the Congress has 7. On the other hand. the Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor in the House.
