December 16, 2025, marks the 54th Vijay Diwas. On this occasion PM Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to the soldiers of the 1971 India-Pakistan War, which resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh. The Prime Minister saluted the courage, sacrifice and unwavering spirit of the armed forces and described their contributions as a defining moment in India’s military history through a social media post on X. He said that their bravery “protected our nation and etched a moment of pride in our history.” Modi added that Vijay Diwas stands as a salute to the valour of these soldiers and a source of inspiration for future generations.

President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute and recalled the dedication and patriotism exhibited by members of the Indian Armed Forces during the conflict. She emphasised the courage displayed in 1971 and highlighted contemporary contributions of the army, such as Operation Sindoor. She cited the force’s preparedness and commitment to national security in the present era. Murmu extended her warm wishes to soldiers and their families and reaffirmed the nation’s pride in their deeds.

The Indian Army shared rare and previously unseen footage and archival content commemorating the historic war. The Army described Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the decisive and historic victory achieved by Indian forces and their allies in the post. It recalled how Indian soldiers, alongside the Mukti Bahini (Bangladesh’s liberation fighters), played a crucial role in ending widespread atrocities committed by the opposing army and securing peace in the region. The army noted that the conflict culminated in the surrender of nearly 93,000 Pakistani troops within 13 days, which is one of the largest military surrenders in modern history.

Vijay Diwas is observed annually in India to honour the armed forces’ achievements in the 1971 war, celebrate their gallantry and remember the sacrifices that reshaped South Asian history.
