Modi dislikes 2 things - Ideas of Mahatma Gandhi & rights of poor: Rahul Gandhi over Changes in MGNREGA

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strongly opposing the alleged “anti-people bill” to rename MGNREGA to VB–G RAM G and the changes proposed to the scheme along with it.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Modi ji has a deep dislike for two things - the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and the rights of the poor. MGNREGA is the living embodiment of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj. It has been a lifeline for millions of rural Indians and proved to be a crucial economic safety net during the COVID pandemic. Yet, this scheme has always unsettled PM Modi.”

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP-led NDA government has systematically tried to weaken the scheme over the last 10 years.

“Today, he is determined to erase MGNREGA altogether,” the post read.

Further elaborating, Rahul wrote, “MGNREGA was built on three fundamental principles: 1. Right to employment - anyone who demands work must be provided employment 2. Autonomy for villages to decide their own development works 3. Full wage support by the Central Government and 75% of material costs.”

He alleged that with the renaming and the proposed changes, MGNREGA is being transformed into a “tool of centralised control”.

“Now, Modi ji wants to transform MGNREGA into a tool of centralised control: 1. Budgets, schemes, and rules will be dictated by the Centre 2. States will be forced to bear 40% of the costs 3. Once funds run out, or during harvest season, workers will be denied employment for months.”

He called the bill a direct insult to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and slammed Prime Minister Modi for allegedly targeting the secure livelihood of poor rural families.

“After destroying the future of India’s youth through massive unemployment, the Modi Government is now targeting the secure livelihood of poor rural families. From Sadak to Sansad, we will oppose this anti-people bill,” the post by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi read.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Pradeep Singh, reacting to Rahul Gandhi's post, told ANI, "... Rahul Gandhi cannot understand the country's mood. PM Modi is implementing the ideas of Gandhi and Patel today."

"Rahul Gandhi, stop spreading misconceptions, and instead reflect on what the people did to you in the Bihar elections..." Singh added.
