India Targets USD 691 Billion Bioeconomy by 2035: NITI Aayog Unveils New Roadmap

India is poised to emerge as a global leader in biotechnology, with its bioeconomy projected to expand to USD 691 billion by 2035. This transformative roadmap, unveiled by NITI Aayog, aims to position the nation among the top three biotechnology powers worldwide. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that India is ready to take a leadership role, noting that the sector will drive significant economic growth.


The government anticipates the bioeconomy will further scale to USD 2.6 trillion by 2047, contributing up to 10 percent of the national GDP. This vision is supported by a mission driven strategy focusing on biomanufacturing, artificial intelligence enabled processes, and robust industry participation. With over 11,000 biotechnology startups already operational, India possesses the foundational ecosystem necessary for this rapid, large scale industrial evolution.


To facilitate this transition, the roadmap proposes six National BioMissions. These cover critical areas including gene and cell therapies, climate resilient agriculture, synthetic biology, disease surveillance, marine biotechnology, and next generation pharmaceuticals. Additionally, a dedicated BioEconomy Growth Fund of Rs 50,000 crore is recommended to bridge the gap between early laboratory research and commercial manufacturing.


Minister Singh emphasized that talent development remains central to this goal, announcing the introduction of engineering biology courses to cultivate a skilled workforce. This focus on domestic capabilities will help build a sovereign biotechnology ecosystem, ultimately enhancing national health and food security.


The broader strategy includes implementing incentive programs and intellectual property protections to foster innovation. By prioritizing decisive execution and institutional support, India seeks to transform its research prowess into global industrial dominance, creating over 30 million high value jobs in the process.
