Guwahati Airport's ‘Bamboo Orchid' Terminal Ranked Among World's Most Beautiful

The Guwahati International Airport has achieved global recognition as its Terminal 2 was recently listed among the world’s most beautiful airports by the prestigious Prix Versailles for 2026. This honor celebrates the facility for its exceptional architecture and design, placing it in the same category as major international hubs located in Frankfurt, Guangzhou, and Pittsburgh.
The terminal features a stunning design titled The Bamboo Orchids, which draws inspiration from local flora and the abundant regional bamboo. Architecturally, the building serves as a gateway to Northeast India, blending modern engineering with traditional artistic elements. A notable feature is the use of approximately 140 metric tons of local bamboo, creating a structure that feels deeply connected to its natural environment.
Beyond aesthetics, the facility is highly functional and passenger friendly. Large digital screens are integrated into the departing areas, displaying nature inspired visuals that enhance the overall traveler experience. The terminal also incorporates advanced technology, including seamless entry options through the government backed DigiYatra system to streamline the boarding process.
Managed by Adani Airport Holdings, the terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2025 and commenced full operations this year. It is specifically designed to accommodate a growing capacity of 1.31 crore passengers annually by 2032.
Travelers have widely praised the new terminal, noting its beauty and modern upgrades compared to older facilities. This project stands as a premier example of sustainable architecture in India, proving that large scale infrastructure can successfully balance environmental sensitivity with sophisticated contemporary design.
