AIIMS to Build 3,000-Bed Rest House Amid Cold Wave After Delhi HC Intervention
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that it has initiated significant measures to provide shelter for patient attendants amid a severe cold wave.
The premier institute has provided land to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) for approximately 80 night shelters and announced plans to construct a 3,000-bed "Vishram Sadan" (rest house) for families currently sleeping on the streets.
Satya Ranjan Swain, the counsel for AIIMS, underscored the institute's "patient-centric" approach. He said that the proposed rest house will be built on two acres of land in Ansari Nagar West with the assistance of an Ahmedabad-based NGO.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia was hearing a suo motu petition initiated after taking cognisance of the "pitiable condition" of patients and their kin awaiting treatment outside hospitals.
Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma informed the court that stakeholder meetings were held to ensure "not a single person had a cold biting him."

The High Court appreciated these improvements but directed nodal officers to remain on "constant vigil". The bench also called upon the Delhi High Court Bar Association to raise funds for the construction of the permanent Vishram Sadan.
