Supreme Court Refuses to Intervene in Ongoing Punjab Panchayat Elections 2024, Cites Risks of Chaos
The decision allows the Panchayat elections, which have already commenced, to continue as scheduled across the state.
Supreme Court on Punjab Panchayat Elections 2024 Latest News: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to interfere with the ongoing Panchayat elections in Punjab. The apex court declined to stay the electoral process, emphasizing that halting elections at this stage could lead to severe disruptions.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court remarked, "Polling has opened; suppose we stay now, there will be complete chaos. Staying the conduct of elections is a grave thing. Tomorrow someone will want to stay parliamentary elections like this. We will list the case, but no interim stay."
The plea was brought before the Supreme Court as an urgent appeal, challenging an earlier ruling by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had also declined to halt the Panchayat elections in Punjab. The petitioners sought an interim stay, which was ultimately denied by the Supreme Court, citing the potential disorder such a decision could cause.
The decision allows the Panchayat elections, which have already commenced, to continue as scheduled across the state.
