A Trusted Voice for Millions: PM Modi Hails Radio’s Enduring Legacy on World Radio Day 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked World Radio Day on Friday by celebrating the medium as a "trusted voice" for citizens in both rural and urban India. In a message shared on his official X account, the Prime Minister acknowledged the tireless efforts of professionals in the industry, noting that radio has consistently provided timely news, fostered creativity, and showcased local talent for decades.

Reflecting on his monthly broadcast, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi highlighted how the platform has allowed him to witness the collective power of society firsthand. The programme, which highlights unique community initiatives, serves as a direct communication bridge between the Prime Minister and the public.

This global theme for the year is “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice.” This theme highlights that technology, specifically AI, can enhance radio operations if utilised correctly and responsibly.

First proposed by UNESCO in 2011 and officially adopted by the UN in 2012, World Radio Day also commemorates the 1946 founding of United Nations Radio. Experts note that radio is experiencing a revival in India, driven by the expansion of FM stations and the integration of digital podcasts, ensuring the medium remains a vital part of the nation's information landscape.
