Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, announced a three-member panel to probe allegations against High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma.
On the evening of Holi earlier this year, semi-burnt stacks of cash were found in the premises of Justice Yashwant Verma, following a fire incident at his residence.
The three members of the Committee announced today include Justice Arvind Kumar, Supreme Court Judge, Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava, Chief Justice Madras High Court, and BV Acharya, Senior Advocate, Karnataka High Court. The committee will submit its report as early as possible.
“The proposal will remain pending till the receipt of the report of the inquiry committee," Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also accepted a motion signed by 146 MPs for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma.
On the fateful evening of Holi this year, a fire incident at the premises of the judge in question led to the alleged discovery of the cash. The police personnel and first emergency responders who reached the scene, following the fire incident, discovered unaccounted cash.
Supreme Court Advocate, Ashwani Kumar Dubey, speaking on the development to ANI said, "The formation of a committee comprising a Supreme Court judge, a Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court and an eminent jurist by the Lok Sabha speaker is a welcome move."
He added, "There were a lot of discussions in the corridors about how a detailed inquiry would be conducted, whose money was there, for what purpose it was given, and who were the other accused… So this is an important and welcome move and as soon as the inquiry report is submitted to the speaker, further action will be taken in the matter”
In video footage and photographs from the incident, released by the Supreme Court on 22, semi-burnt stacks of cash were seen lying on the floor inside the room.
The Supreme Court had released the data following an in-house inquiry report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya to the top court in March earlier this year.
