MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday said External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and the Foreign Minister of Iran have had three conversations in recent days, with the last discussion focusing on issues pertaining to the safety of shipping and India's energy security.
“Beyond that, it would be premature for me to say anything," Jaiswal added during a media briefing earlier today.
Reacting to a media query about the current status of Indians stranded in Iran, Jaiswal said, “We have around 9,000 Indian nationals in Iran, including students, seafarers, businesspeople, professionals and pilgrims. Following advisories issued earlier, many, especially students have already returned home.”
Jaiswal said that some of the Indians have been shifted from Tehran to safer locations. Additionally, assistance is being provided to those who wish to leave via Azerbaijan and Armenia, including help with visas and land border crossings so they can take commercial flights back.
“Our mission in Tehran remains in constant touch with the community and is providing all possible assistance,” he added.
Additionally, Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with several Gulf leaders since the conflict began and has stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, while also emphasising the importance of avoiding civilian casualties.
“We have highlighted that the safety and welfare of the large Indian community in GCC countries is a top priority. Our External Affairs Minister has also held three recent conversations with his Iranian counterpart, and we recognise that the conflict is impacting people and countries around the world,” he added.
