From 1991 Reforms to 2026 Tribute: Angela Merkel to Deliver Dr. Manmohan Singh Inaugural Memorial Lecture
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit New Delhi on February 26 to deliver the inaugural Dr. Manmohan Singh Memorial Lecture. The event, titled "Germany and India in Times of Global Change", was officially confirmed on Thursday by the Dr. Manmohan Singh Trust and his family. Following her address, Merkel will participate in a discussion with former Ambassador Shivshankar Menon.
The memorial lecture marks the first major event honouring the late Prime Minister, who passed away on December 26, 2024. Sources revealed that the selection of Merkel was carefully considered, identifying her as the most suitable dignitary to launch the series. Although an invitation was extended last year, formal confirmation of her availability was finalised only recently.
Merkel’s tenure as Germany’s first female Chancellor spanned from 2005 to 2021, making her the second-longest-serving leader in the country's history. Known for her global influence, she was also the recipient of the 2022 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award for her role during the 2015-2016 refugee crisis.
This lecture serves as a tribute to Dr. Singh, widely recognised as the primary architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms. This event serves as the first memorial lecture held in his honour.
