Chandigarh: Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and protection of the elderly, Punjab’s Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced that the state government has been rigorously implementing The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The law provides a strong legal framework to safeguard senior citizens from harassment, assault, or unlawful claims on their property.
a recent case, Dr. Baljit Kaur shared that swift intervention was made after senior citizen Avinash Chander Khanna, a resident of Khanna, filed a complaint against his son and daughter-in-law. On her directions, the Ludhiana District Administration and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Khanna, promptly acted to resolve the matter.
Officials, including the District Social Security Officer and local police, visited the complainant’s residence, held hearings with both parties, and explained the legal consequences under the Act. The accused family members acknowledged their mistake, tendered an apology, and assured that they would treat their parents with dignity going forward.
Dr. Baljit Kaur emphasized that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government will not tolerate any form of mistreatment of elders. “Our senior citizens are the pride of Punjab. Anyone attempting to harass them or usurp their property will face strict action under the law,” she said.
The Minister added that this timely and sensitive resolution reflects the government’s proactive approach to protecting the rights, dignity, and well-being of senior citizens across the state.
