In a tragic accident, at least nine people lost their lives and nine others were injured after multiple vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar River when a 43-year-old bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Vadodara district early Wednesday, The Indian Express reported.

The bridge is located in Mujpur village in Padra taluka of Vadodara district.

Anil Dhameliya, District Collector of Vadodara, told The Indian Express, “We have rescued five people with minor injuries, and two have been confirmed dead. As rescue operations continue, we know that two trucks, an Eeco van, a pickup van, and an auto-rickshaw fell into the river when a portion of the bridge suddenly gave way.”

Dhameliya added that the accident did not occur in the deepest part of the river and that the bridge had undergone repairs just last year.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel announces ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those injured.

In a post on X, he wrote, "The collapse of a span of the Gambhira Bridge, connecting Anand and Vadodara, has caused an accident that is deeply distressing to the heart. The state government stands with full compassion alongside every family affected by this tragedy. The state government will provide assistance of 4 lakh rupees to the heirs of each person who lost their life in the accident. Additionally, each person injured in the accident will receive assistance of 50,000 rupees, and all treatment arrangements will also be provided by the state government."

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences to the bereaved families in a post on X, saying, “The news of the death of several people in a bridge accident in Gujarat's Vadodara district is extremely tragic. I express my deep condolences to the bereaved families. My prayers are with all those injured in this accident for a speedy recovery.”

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah also shared his grief, stating, “The incident that occurred in Vadodara district of Gujarat is very tragic. The NDRF team has reached the site and is engaged in relief and rescue operations. All possible assistance is being provided to the victims. My condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
