A 39-year-old woman died in a fire that broke out in the Kotwali police station area of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, police said.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Jayraj Kuber, the incident occurred on Sunday. After receiving information about the fire, police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and launched a firefighting operation.

He said it took considerable effort to bring the blaze under control, and the fire was completely extinguished only by early morning.

The deceased has been identified as Ankita Agarwal. Police said that as soon as people present at the location realised the fire, they ran upstairs to save themselves.

Kuber said the woman tried to save herself by hiding in a washroom but died due to suffocation.

A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and further procedures are underway, police added.
