Kharge requests discussion on India's energy security amid current West Asia situation
"Prices are going up. LPG prices went up by 60 rupees just the day before yesterday."
Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, on Monday requested a discussion on the issue of “emerging challenges” to India’s energy security in view of the changing geopolitical situation in West Asia.
Kharge has also moved a notice seeking a Short Duration Discussion on a matter of urgent public importance: “Emerging challenges for India's energy security.”
The request comes after experts and opposition leaders raised concerns about crude oil prices rising as trade routes remain disrupted due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Shashi Tharoor earlier today remarked that India’s energy security is at “peril”.
“Oil has gone above $100 a barrel this morning. Gas is being completely stopped from coming out of Qatar. Our factories do not have gas coming into India right now from that side. We can get from the East. So we'll try and get some supplies, but we are certainly suffering. Prices are going up. LPG prices went up by 60 rupees just the day before yesterday. And of course, petrol is going to cost more. So all of this is going to be a real problem for our country,” Tharoor said, speaking to news agency ANI.
“And therefore, we need to have a very responsible approach and proactive approach from the government,” he added.
Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala has also given a Suspension of Business Notice in the Rajya Sabha under Rule 267, demanding an immediate discussion on the implications for India arising from the ongoing developments and tensions in West Asia.
Congress MP K. C. Venugopal has also submitted an Adjournment Motion Notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss emerging challenges relating to energy security due to the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia.
