Opposition to move no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

The Opposition will move a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in the second part of the Budget Session, as it requires 20 days’ notice, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.

According to the news agency, the reasons for the move include Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi not being allowed to speak in the House, women MPs being named by the Chair, certain Treasury Bench MPs always being given privilege in the House, and the way eight Opposition MPs were suspended for the entire session.

The suspended MPs include Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Padole, S. Venkatesan, and Dean Kuriakose.

The MPs have been holding protests at the Makar Dwar ever since they were suspended. Today as well, the leaders were seen raising slogans on the stairs of Parliament, holding posters that read, “You can suspend us, but you can’t silence us.”

Rahul Gandhi was repeatedly stopped from speaking in the Lok Sabha after he attempted to quote excerpts from the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief MM Naravane. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned repeatedly for several days, with no proceedings taking place.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, had also raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor speaking to the media at the premises of the parliament today, said, "I came to speak on the Budget, but it looks like the government and the Lok Sabha Speaker are not interested in running the House. I will come again at 2 PM and try to speak in the House. The Finance Minister was not even sitting in the House, I think they knew that the House would be adjourned..."

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, speaking to the media today, said, “Whatever decision the senior leaders of the INDIA alliance take, all Opposition parties will stick to it."

Congress MP Mallu Ravi, also speaking to ANI on the matter, said, “Whenever we want to speak, the House is adjourned. Today, we also asked for permission for the LoP to speak, but it was not granted.”

Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Rajesh Verma alleged that the Congress does not want the House to function.

“It is important to recognise that the Opposition is neither allowing the House to function nor making any positive contribution to the government's decision-making. Bringing this no-confidence motion proves that they only want to do politics..." Verma alleged.
