Sonam Wangchuk Detention: SC Notice to Centre, Ladakh UT on Wife's Plea Challenging Detention: The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Centre and Union Territory of Ladakh on a plea filed by Sonam Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali J Angmo challenging the climate activist's detention under the National Security Act, and seeking his immediate release.
However, a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria refused to pass any order on providing grounds of detention to Wangchuk's wife and posted the matter for hearing on October 14.
Wangchuk was detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four people dead and 90 injured in the Union territory.
Wangchuk is lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan.
Gitanjali Angmo filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court on October 2, challenging Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under the NSA and seeking his immediate release.
Earlier, on October 1, she had written to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, seeking her intervention.
Gitanjali shared a picture of her legal team yesterday. The team includes Kapil Sibal, Senior Advocate and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
In a post on X, Gitanjali wrote, “My heartfelt thanks to @KapilSibal ji and @VTankha ji for their pro bono assistance to @Wangchuk66 and the people of Ladakh. Our legal team for tomorrow.”
Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and lawyer Vivek Tankha, who is also part of her legal team, said that Gitanjali met him on October 1.
“@GitanjaliAngmo ji met me on Oct 1. A well-meaning, educated lady in distress. Sonam Wangchuk, for no fault of his, was jailed! The government dislikes leaders who espouse social causes and detests regional democracy. In their minds, Sonam was a traitor. A tragedy!!” Vivek Tankha wrote in a post on X.
In a separate post on X, Gitanjali thanked Vivek Tankha, saying, “Thank you @VTankha for your support and solidarity! Many thanks, dear @RitamKhare, for orchestrating all this in the best possible way!”
