Assault Not Just on CJI, but on Constitution: Sonia Gandhi on Attempted Attack on CJI RB Gavai

Assault Not Just on CJI, but on Constitution: Sonia Gandhi on Attempted Attack on CJI BR Gavai News: CCP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi condemned the attempted attack on the Chief Justice of India earlier today, calling it an assault not just on the CJI, but on the Constitution as well.

In a statement issued by the CCP Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi said, “No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well.”

“Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious, but the nation must stand in solidarity with him, unitedly, with a deep sense of anguish and outrage,” she further stated.

Meanwhile, the advocate involved, identified as Rakesh Kishore, has been suspended from practice in all courts with immediate effect after he attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai, by the Bar Council of India.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condemned the act, calling it “extremely shameful, unfortunate, and alarming.”

“This is not just an attack on the Chief Justice of the country, but on our Constitution, the entire judicial system, and the rule of law,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said. She added, “The Honorable Chief Justice, through their hard work, dedication, and competence, has broken all societal barriers to achieve the highest judicial position. Such an attack on them is fatal to both the judiciary and democracy. No amount of condemnation is enough.”

Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, also condemned the act and sought immediate legal action against the unruly lawyer “who sought to insult both the Chief Justice and the judiciary.”

He further stated, “B.R. Gavai belongs to the Dalit community and has risen to the highest echelons of the judiciary by overcoming entrenched social barriers through merit and perseverance.”

“This incident is a stark reminder that caste-based prejudice and Manuvaadi mindsets continue to persist—even 75 years after the enactment of the Indian Constitution,” he said strongly.

Siddaramaiah continued, “I wish to assure Hon’ble Chief Justice Gavai that he is not alone. Crores of secular and democratic citizens who uphold the values of the Constitution stand firmly by his side. The Chief Justice does not represent any religion or political party. From that perspective, I appeal to people across all castes, faiths, and political affiliations to unequivocally condemn this disgraceful act in one voice.”

“We must not overlook the fact that divisive politics based on caste and religion have created the conditions for Manuvaadi attitudes like that of Rakesh Kishore to emerge and thrive. Just as certain individuals attempt to glorify Nathuram Godse—a convicted assassin—as a nationalist icon, we are now witnessing similar elements celebrate the lawyer’s shameful act. It is imperative that legal action is taken not only against the perpetrator but also against those who are supporting or encouraging such behavior,” he added.
