The tragic fire at Malviya Nagar's 'Flourish Stay' B&B hotel, which resulted in 21 fatalities, has sparked intense public alarm regarding fire safety protocols throughout Delhi. This tragic incident has forced a close look at official records, revealing a deeply worrying trend in the national capital's emergency readiness.
According to Delhi Government records, a staggering 543 people lost their lives in fire-related accidents from 2019 through March 2026. The crisis began escalating significantly during the 2019-20 period, which recorded the highest death toll due to the infamous Anaj Mandi tragedy that killed 44 individuals.
The subsequent years saw fluctuating but consistently grim numbers. The fire department recorded 41 casualties in 2020-21 and 55 deaths in 2021-22, before the toll spiked again to 95 fatalities during 2022-23. Over these years, injuries mounted rapidly, with 4,403 people wounded between 2019 and 2025.
The upward trajectory continued into the mid-2020s, with data showing 77 deaths in 2023-24, 90 in 2024-25, and 84 in 2025-26. Alongside the rising fatalities, emergency calls to the Delhi Fire Service surged from 17,231 in 2019-20 to a massive 20,379 calls in the last financial year.
This relentless crisis has extended straight into the current year, with 65 fire-related deaths already registered in roughly the first six months of 2026. Recent deadly blazes in Vivek Vihar and Palam, which claimed nine lives each, further underscore the systemic danger.
