Ensure that mobile phone is equipped with an inbuilt FM radio receiver function: IT Ministry

NEW-DELHI: The Government has issued an advisory to mobile phone manufacturers to ensure FM radio service on all smartphones. According to media reports, the advisory sent by the 'Information Technology' (IT) Ministry to the 'Indian Cellular and Electronics Association' (ICEA) as well as the 'Manufacturers Association for Information Technology' (MAIT) states that the objective of this exercise is not only to provide radio services to all, but also to ensure that FM radio connectivity is accessible during emergencies or natural calamities.

The Advisory issued by the IT Ministry states, "It should be ensured that the mobile phone is equipped with an inbuilt FM radio receiver function or feature. If the function or feature is not disabled or inactive, but the mobile phone is capable of it, then it is further advised add the function or facility."

The IT Ministry in its advisory has said, "It has been noticed that there has been a major shortage of mobile phones with FM tuner facility over the last few years, which has affected not only the ability to receive FM radio services, but also emergency services. They need to be used during disasters."

The IT Ministry said that there is a need for fast, timely and reliable communication through mobile phones equipped with FM radio service as it can save precious life, livelihood and also prepare users to deal with it.
