Violence Resurfaces Despite Recent Peace Agreement, 13 Dead in Manipur Gunfight

Manipur Gunfight News

Manipur Gunfight News: In a distressing turn of events, Manipur witnesses renewed violence as a fatal gunfight erupted between two groups in Tengnoupal district on Monday, leaving 13 people dead. The incident took place near Leethu village, prompting the swift response of security personnel upon receiving the distress call.

According to official sources, the confrontation resulted in the tragic loss of 13 lives, and the authorities have yet to identify the victims. Despite the severity of the incident, no weapons were reportedly recovered from the scene, raising questions about the motive behind the deadly clash.

This occurrence follows closely on the heels of the recent peace agreement between the Government of India and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), celebrated by Kuki-tribal groups in Tengnoupal district on December 3. The timing of this violent incident is notable as it coincides with the lifting of the seven-month-long ban on mobile internet services in the state on Sunday. However, certain border areas in some districts continue to face restrictions.

Notably, Manipur had witnessed unrest on May 3 when the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUMU) organized a 'Tribal Unity March' in the Torbung area of Churachandpur. The march aimed to advocate for Scheduled Tribe status for the Meitei community, a demand that has persisted over time. The rally resulted in violent clashes between tribal and non-tribal communities, prompting police intervention and, eventually, the deployment of army and paramilitary forces.

The lifting and subsequent reinstatement of the internet ban in Manipur earlier in September, intended to curb the spread of hate speech and videos, underscores the complexities and challenges faced by the region. As authorities investigate the recent gunfight, concerns mount over the fragile peace in the state, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to address underlying issues and maintain stability.
