As pollution levels reach alarming highs in the national capital and nearby regions, schools across Delhi-NCR are taking various precautionary measures to protect students, from suspending morning assemblies to shifting outdoor activities indoors.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Sudha Acharya, Principal of ITL Public School, told PTI, “Earlier, as a precaution, we had issued an advisory to parents stating that children suffering from asthma or any respiratory problems are advised to wear masks.”

The school has also suspended early morning assemblies, yoga sessions, and other outdoor activities.

“However, if the physical training (PT) period is scheduled after 10 or 10:30 a.m., students are allowed to go and play outside,” she added.

Dr. Acharya further stated, “We also advised children to stay hydrated, use CNG vehicles, prefer carpooling, or travel by public transport such as the Metro. We encouraged installing indoor plants at home as part of promoting sustainable living practices.”

Similarly, authorities at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School have converted outdoor sports periods into indoor sessions.

Shalini Nambiar, Director-Principal of the school, told ANI, “We have converted all the outdoor sports periods into indoor sessions. Indoor venues have been arranged where sports teachers are conducting activities with the students. Different rooms have been allocated for various activities because it’s important to protect the children from pollution. The main effort is to ensure that all periods are held indoors.”

At the time of publishing this article, Delhi remains the 5th most polluted city in the world, according to IQAir.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), several areas in Delhi are in the poor air quality category, while others are in the very poor category.
