Congress MPs hold poster reading ‘PM is compromised' over India–US trade deal

Congress MPs on Wednesday morning held a poster reading “PM is compromised”, featuring photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein placed side by side. The protest took place at the staircase of Parliament, where the MPs also raised slogans of “tanashahi nahi chalegi.”

The protest followed remarks made a day earlier by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who made similar allegations while speaking to the media about the India–US trade agreement.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Modi was “compromised” on the India–US trade deal, which was signed and announced late on Monday night. He stated that both he and the Prime Minister knew who was involved and how the deal was signed. While speaking on the issue, Gandhi also made references to Epstein’s flights.

Rahul Gandhi made these remarks after he was not allowed to speak in Parliament on the President’s address.

Chaos was witnessed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after a paper-throwing incident occurred in the House when the Congress leader was denied an opportunity to speak on the President’s address as well as on issues related to China.

The uproar led to the suspension of eight Congress MPs for the remainder of the Budget Session.

The suspended MPs include Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, B. Manickam Tagore, Dr. Prashant Yadaorao Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, and S. Venkatesan.

The developments stemmed from disruptions in the House over references made by Rahul Gandhi to an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General M. M. Naravane, which reportedly contains details related to the India–China conflict.

The book was scheduled to be published in January 2024; however, after excerpts appeared in December 2023, its publication was deferred as it had not received clearance from the Army.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh, speaking to the media on the premises of Parliament on Wednesday, hit back at Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the India–US trade deal and the Epstein files, saying, “He will have to take 100 births to become like Prime Minister Modi, who thinks about the public round the clock.”
