Bhopal, India – The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department's State Tiger Force has received commendation from INTERPOL Headquarters in Lyon, France, for its successful arrest and prosecution of well-known international tiger trafficker Tashi Sherpa. The international criminal police organization lauded the State Tiger Force's "exemplary action" in a letter addressed to the Head of the State Tiger Strike Force Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal.

INTERPOL has also pledged its support for further investigations into Sherpa's wider criminal network, which is believed to be active across India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. The congratulatory letter from INTERPOL stated, "Your team (State Tiger Force, Madhya Pradesh) first informed INTERPOL about SHERPA in 2015, identifying him as a key member of an organized criminal group smuggling tigers between India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. Over the next nine years, until his arrest in 2024, INTERPOL issued a Diffusion (international alert) about SHERPA and arranged regular meetings between India and Nepal to share information, confirm SHERPA's identity, and find him. Thanks to this cooperation, his arrest and prosecution have become an important success in fighting wildlife crime."

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who shared the letter on X, stated that Sherpa has been sentenced to five years in prison. This conviction was a direct result of the State Tiger Force's thorough investigation and the robust case presented in court.
