The Karnataka Cabinet on Wednesday approved the renaming of Bengaluru City University as Dr. Manmohan Singh City University, India Today reported. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held at Nandi Hills.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his budget speech in March 2025, had announced that the university would be rechristened in honour of Dr. Singh’s contributions to India.

This will be the first university in the country to be named after the late Prime Minister, who passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.

The state-run university, established in 2017, was initially known as Bengaluru Central University before it was renamed Bengaluru City University.

In addition to this move, the state government has also approved proposals to rename Bengaluru Rural district as Bengaluru North, and change the name of Bagepalli taluk to Baghyanagara.

The report also highlighted that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had previously announced plans to establish a research and study centre at Bangalore University, dedicated to Dr. Singh’s life and work, following his death.

Speaking in Belagavi on December 27, 2024, a day after Singh’s passing, Shivakumar had stated, “Destiny is not in our hands, but I am proud to say that though Manmohan Singh is no more, he is still alive through his contributions to the nation. His legacy cannot be altered. At Bangalore University, we are going to start a research and study centre for all students to learn about the reforms he introduced for the country’s growth.”

The initiative aims to educate students about Dr. Singh’s role in economic reforms and his impact on India’s development.
