Minor Dalit Girl with Slit Throat Denied Treatment, Dies; Raises Serious Questions on Bihar Government
A minor Dalit girl from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, who was raped in the last week of May, died Sunday morning at a state-run hospital in Patna after she was allegedly left waiting for hours. Her case has raised serious questions about Bihar’s government, with the opposition terming the way things unfolded after the rape as a “criminal disorder of law and order in Bihar.” The accused has been arrested.
The doctors have confirmed to The Hindu that she was raped.
The girl was brought to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in critical condition four days after she was denied treatment by AIIMS, Patna, ANI repored.
She was reportedly attacked with a knife after the rape. “The girl died this morning. Her throat and chest were brutally slashed by the accused. He had also attempted to kill her by slitting her throat. Her vocal cords were damaged, and she was unable to speak. The accused was arrested,” a police officer stated.
The accused, who is a fish seller and a resident of a nearby village, has been arrested by the police.
SSP Muzaffarpur Sushil Kumar on June 2 told ANI, "This incident occurred on 27th May... The accused lived in a neighboring village and knew them. He used to come there often. He was a fish seller. He lured the girl and raped her. Taking swift action, the police arrested the accused. He has been sent to judicial custody.”
Police confirmed that the samples collected have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and said a chargesheet will be filed within 15 days, with the case to be brought under a speedy trial.
“FSL team had gone there and examined the spot. All samples have been collected, including samples from clothes. We have sent all of this to FSL for examination. Besides this, we will file a chargesheet within 15 days. This will be brought under a speedy trial so that we can take whatever further action is required,” SSP Muzaffarpur added.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday questioned the law and order situation in the state, alleging that the Chief Minister never discussed the case.
He said, “On the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Muzaffarpur, the double-engine government has failed in Bihar. The CM never discussed this; I am unsure if he is even aware of the incidents. There is a criminal disorder of law and order in Bihar; law and order have collapsed. There is administrative anarchy in the whole of Bihar, but no action is being taken... No one has time to meet the victim or the victim's family. The CM and both Deputy CMs are busy in political programs...”
Bihar Congress Chief Rajesh Ram, at a protest held on Sunday demanding justice in the case, said, "There are two aspects to this case. First, that she was raped. After the rape, there was a brutal attempt to murder her. Second, the government left no stone unturned in its negligence. Due to the delay in treatment, that girl is no longer alive. For this, the government is directly responsible for the failure of the healthcare system. Go see for yourself."
However, PMCH Incharge Superintendent Abhijit Singh denied the family’s claims about the delay in treatment and stated that the girl had been given proper medical care.
Reacting to the incident, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said that the Bihar government was ‘negligent not only in providing security but also in saving her life.’
“The brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment is extremely shameful. If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. But the double-engine government was negligent not only in providing security but also in saving her life. We will not sit quietly until the victim’s family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers," Rahul Gandhi stated in a post on X.
